Benefits:

PML designed this 722.6/NAG1 transmission pans for:

  • Cooling — extra capacity on deep models, fins, and aluminum construction for reported temperature drops of 10 to 35 degrees
  • Clearance — deep middle to clear cross members on 2007 and newer models
  • Drain plug — on the side of the pan for safety
  • Secure seal — machined flat flange, no more retaining clips and formed gasket
  • Strength — high quality, thick walls

The Chrysler/Mercedes NAG1, 722.6 family of transmission includes W5A580, WA580, W5A380, and W5J400.

Applications:

PML designed our deep middle NAG1, 722.6 (W5A580, WA580, W5A380, W5J400) transmission pan for:

  • Sprinter Vans, 2500 and 3500 with the W5A380 transmission, 2002 to 2013
  • Sprinter Vans (Mercedes), 2500 and 3500, 3.0 diesel with 722.6, 2WD, 2010 to 2017, maybe 2018
  • Some Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, and Mercedes vehicles with 722.6/NAG1, depending on clearance available on vehicle

Always check your vehicle before ordering to verify set up and clearance.

From about 2002 to 2013 Dodge, Mercedes and Freightliner all made Sprinter Vans with the W5A380 transmission. 2007 and newer models have cross members running across the rear and front of the stock pan. PML put a step in the front and rear of the pan to clear these frame cross members.

T1N Sprinters: 2002 to 2006 T1N Sprinters may not have cross members below the stock pan and may be able to use our stock capacity or deep pan.

NCV3 Sprinters: 2007 to 2013 NCV3 Sprinters usually have cross members below the stock pan and will need this pan with the steps in the front and back for clearance.

Sprinter with Winnebago: The Sprinter cab and chassis is used under many Winnebago models, such as View and Navion. This pan has been installed on several of these.

HWH Leveling System: Although we have had this pan installed on vehicles with the hydraulic jack system by HWH for leveling, it is a close fit. Here are reports from our customers:

  • One customer reported that the leveling kit is toward the rear of the rear cross member and does not create any additional clearance issues.
  • One customer with a 2006 Sprinter 2007 View reported that the front leveler brace had to be modified to allow the pan to fit and he provided details. See INSTALLATIONS.
  • One customer reported that the HWH brace is slightly in the way to install the pan. He used a hydraulic jack to push the transmission up a little to gain enough room to work.

4WD Sprinters: The drive shaft may be too close to the pan. PML pans have thick walls. Jason tried to intall this PML pan on his 2015 Mercedes 3500 Diesel Sprinter 4WD and the side of the pan hit the drive shaft. 4WD models with drive shaft interference can see PML stock capacity pan, which has a finned bottom for cooling and an improved sealing surface.

Freightliner Sprinters: Check carefully for clearance to frame cross members. A 2010 Freightliner Sprinter 2WD 3.0 diesel did not have any extra space. PML pans are 0.150 inch larger because of the thick walls.

Installation Note: Many customers have reported back that to remove the stock pan and install the PML pan, they had to support and jack up the transmission and then drop the frame cross member.

PML makes three pans for the NAG1/722.6 transmission. Need help figuring out which pan you need? Check out this video or see Guidelines, below.

General Guidelines:

To determine which PML NAG1, 722.6 pan will work best, check how much space is available for a larger transmission pan. Look at the space from the stock transmission pan to:

  • Frame
  • Exhaust
  • Ground (the transmission pan should not be lower than the frame)
  • Skid or sound dampening plates
  • Drive Shaft
  • Other vehicle parts

Little or no space, like Jeep Wrangler and some cars:

Some space, like Grand Cherokee, some cars (Magnum, Charger), some Sprinter:
NAG1, 722.6 2 Quarts Over Transmission Pan

Lots of ground clearance, like Sprinter:
NAG1, 722.6 2.5 Quarts Over Transmission Pan (this pan)

These are GENERAL guidelines. PML cannot tell which pan will work since vehicle configurations vary.

PML makes a cork composite gasket for PML NAG1/722.6 transmission pans.

One PML gasket is included with each transmission pan. Additional gaskets are available.

PML NAG1/722.6 pans are not compatible with the stock gaskets. The PML gasket is not compatible with the stock pan.

RTV can be used in place of the gasket but the pan is designed to work with the gasket.

In this video, learn how this PML pan seals to the transmission housing:

PML design this pan to work with the stock filter. The Mercedes part number on the filter PML used during design and development is 140 277 00 95. There are filter supports cast into the bottom of the pan to hold the filter in place at the same level as the stock pan. The filter supports eliminate the need for an extension.

Dipstick and Transmission Fluid Level

The fluid level should be at the same level in the stock pan and a PML pan. On many vehicles, the dipstick uses the bottom of the pan as a stop. PML pans have a ledge where the dipstick hits at the same level as the stock pan even though the PML pan is larger overall. In the above image of the inside of the pan, you can see the square ledge near the filter supports.

Many vehicles with these transmissions do not have a dipstick and the correct fluid level is based on temperature. The cap for the transmission fluid fill and level check can say "See Dealer". The installer of a replacement pan needs to have the correct tools to replace the transmission fluid according to the factory instructions.

Shield on Passenger's Front Corner

Some vehicles have a shield that attaches to the retaining clip at the front, passenger side corner of the stock pan.

PML added a tab for the shield to bolt on to in July 2018. For pans without the tab, you might need to fabricate a connector or slightly bend the shield to bolt onto the PML pan.

Drain for PML 722.6/NAG1 Deep Middle Transmission Pan

PML NAG1, 722.6 Sprinter transmission pan drain hole  Click on image to view larger.

PML placed the drain hole on the driver's side, near the rear of the vehicle for part number 11124 (as shown in picture).

A magnetic drain plug is included with the pan and all the mounting bolts. The side location is safer than the bottom since there is less chance for damage than on the bottom. There is still easy access for maintenance.

Optional Machining for Temperature Sending Unit

Optionally, PML can drill and tap a 1/8 NPT hole for a temperature sending unit. This would be for an aftermarket temperature gage. There is a custom machining charge.

PML designed two locations for adding a hole for a temperature sending unit, one on the passenger/right side and one on the driver/left side.

Select the option before adding pan to cart. A plug for the hole is included. The standard size is 1/8 NPT. Check your aftermarket gage to verify the thread specifications for the sending unit before ordering. Call or email if you need a different size.
